While it may be tempting, even noble, to want to introduce these native people to things like modern medicine, religion, and Angry Birds, if doing so upsets the long-held traditions of the people, then it may be best to take a hands-off approach. The lesson that can be learned from the murder of Chau and the history of the Sentinelese people is that the spread of modern life, for all its conveniences, into isolated regions, and to native people should not be viewed from one side. ![]() Both of these counties follow India's example by enacting policies that protect these native people from unwanted attempts to modernize them. For example, the Lacondon tribe of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula were first contacted by outsiders in 1924, and the Pintupi tribe of Western Australia were not known until 1984.īy far, the largest number of uncontacted tribes are in Papua New Guinea and in Brazil. Some groups were previously unknown until recent times. In fact, as of the early 2010s, there were as many as 100 groups of uncontacted, isolated people living mostly in the Amazon rainforest, in New Guinea, and on remote islands. The Sentinelese tribe is not the only group of people on the planet that remain isolated from the modern world. The Sentinelese Are Alone, But They Are Not Alone Most outsiders who have stepped foot on the island have been killed by the native Sentinelese. Since then, the Sentinelese people have strongly resented outsiders who attempt to land on their island, greeting visitors with a volley of arrows. Fearing that they, too, may die, the members of the expedition released them back to the island. Their population ranges from about 80 to 150 individuals, and they maintain a hunter-gatherer lifestyle reminiscent of the Stone Age, devoid of agricultural practices. The Sentinelese people, residing on North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean, are a stone age tribe that has inhabited the island for an estimated 60,000 years. They continue to resist all contact with outsiders, attacking anyone who. They live on their own small forested island called North Sentinel, which is approximately the size of Manhattan, and which is part of an island chain that is also home to another uncontacted tribe, the Shompen. Two of them, an elderly couple, died in captivity. The Sentinelese are the most isolated tribe in the world. They were kept confined at Port Blair while they were being studied, and the captives did not farewell. ![]() The first thing that the members of the expedition did was capture six of the Sentinelese people, so things were already off to a bad start. In 1881, a British expedition led by Maurice Vidal Portman traveled to North Sentinel Island to study the native tribe.
